The Honda Jazz

Every day we're told the world is becoming more Americanised, but that, as all the best things are from America this is no bad thing. Space travel, fast food, blues and jazz, theme parks, telephone numbers such as 0-8-0-0-F-U-N-T-I-M-E have all found their way over here. What's wrong with using numbers on the telephone anyway, why use letters? No, for me the US of A has contributed more than enough for the time being and rather than our culture becoming further Americanised, I vote for us to become Japanised. I mean that's where the really cool stuff comes from: computer games, Manga cartoons, toilets that shoot water towards your…well you know, that cool robot from television (not available at your Honda dealer) and the most reliable cars on the planet.

Yep for cool stuff that 99 percent of the time will never be used in mainstream markets, Japan is the place to go. It's the one percent that really does work however that excites me the most. The Sony PlayStation has been the market leader since its inception and the gaming industry as a whole is a multi, multi billion pound yearly business. In fact Japan's economy alone generated £120 billion through the sale of publishing, games, films and music in 2006 alone. The cars are fast becoming market leaders too. Gone are the days of reliable vehicles that looked like a baby had styled it - enter the simply stunning Nissan GTR or Honda's most successful hot-hatch the Civic Type R (this unlike the robot is available at your Honda dealer).

The reason why the latest cars from Japan are so well styled whilst maintaining the build quality and reliability you'd expect from the country is that they've embraced their culture, which to Western society is, well, bonkers. We've all seen the clip shows on TV that showcase the mad game shows Japan have as entertainment. In the UK you answer a few questions correctly and you win some money. In Japan you answer a few questions correctly and then you only have to eat ten snakes, jump through fire and have your leg chopped off to win the big prize.

Then there's the Bosozoku. Essentially they were a motorcycle gang that started in the mid fifties, but thanks to Manga comics and Anime films such as Akira, the image has been glamourised so the modern day Bosozoku are more style than actual gang fighting and neighbourhood terrorising. They have also branched out to modifying cars with crazy features such as exhausts that reach skywards and end above the roofline. Japanese culture is the perfect ying and yang - they work really hard, they play really, really hard.

You can see now why channelling all the above into a car such as the Nissan GTR is pretty exciting. You have the reliability and build quality from the hard-working Japanese culture, the mad styling from the Manga culture and the incredible handling and on-board computer wizardry from the gaming culture. You can see these elements filtering through to many Japanese car-makers and most notably across their range, Honda.

When judging a car brand, I like to see what their entry-level car is and if that's good then it's a good rule of thumb to assume this standard is maintained as the pound signs increase. Using this logic and a trip to your Honda dealer will bring the Honda Jazz before you. It's a fun little hatchback from the styling to the way it drives around town. In fact it's not too dissimilar to Doctor Who's Tardis. Admittedly the Jazz doesn't transcend time and space, but it's far bigger on the inside than its exterior would have you believe. The front and rear lights wrap around both ends and a simple arched line down the side completes the shape. It is once again Japan in microcosm: small, functional and stylish.

There are two engines available, a 1.2 litre unit or a 1.4 VTEC litre version. The later is also available with a 6-speed i-SHIFT gearbox that is semi automatic. The funky features don't end there, with the Jazz offering a panoramic glass roof, a refrigerated glove box and iPod connectivity. Crucially your Honda dealer will take pride in declaring the Jazz emitting just 130g/km CO2 and returning a combined fuel consumption figure of 51.4mpg. The Jazz is cheap to run then, but it's reasonable to buy in the first place, with prices starting at £9,990 in the UK.

The verdict on the Jazz then is a glowing one. Obviously I'd love a Nissan GTR to embrace my love of all things Japanese, but to suit my wallet and I'm sure the vast majority of readers, nip to your Honda dealer for a sm

The BMW 320d

Could this BMW be the perfect car for high-mileage drivers?

BMW's never one to rest on its laurels. After listening carefully to customer feedback, the car manufacturer has finely honed its popular 3 Series range. And the result is the latest evolution of the 320d.

Saloon or estate, this 2.0-litre diesel is an executive dream - offering a cocktail of power, comfort, low CO2 rating and impressive economy. This could prove the perfect car for high-mileage drivers.

The official combined economy figure of 58.9mpg will make most people sit up and take notice. They aren't the type of figures you'd expect to see from a 177bhp BMW, capable of hitting 60mph from standing in under eight seconds.

But that's not all - so frugal is the 320d - it's been fitted with a stop-start mechanism to cut the engine automatically at a standstill - every little helps!

Green but gutsy
More concerned about saving fuel than getting places? The 320d is no gutless wonder. It might be tree-huggingly clean (look at its 128 CO2 rating) but the motor willingly delivers strong acceleration on demand. The German manufacturer has refined its diesel unit for effortless motorway cruising and yet made it flexible enough to tolerate stop-start town driving.

It's not just under the bonnet where changes have taken place either - the bonnet itself has changed. It's now beefier looking and the trademark kidney grilles and headlights have a more streamlined appearance. In fact, subtle styling tweaks across the car's interior and exterior keep the 3-Series looking fresh.

Tricking the eye with some cunning optical illusions, BMW has made the car appear longer and more muscular without actually adding any extra kg or cm to the spec sheet.

The 320d sits in the lofty car insurance group 14 so it isn't going to be the cheapest car to cover, which is why it's important to try an insurance comparison site to compare quotes to find a good deal.

Gadgets galore
If you're a high-mileage driver and interior is all-important, the 320d won't disappoint.

The introduction of the iDrive display and controller, complete with handy shortcut keys, is a welcome addition. And the system includes better mapping and an easier way to switch between phone calls, Sat Nav and radio.

On the road, the 3 Series has always been well mannered rather than thrilling. Its compact, well-balanced proportions and sporty rear wheel drive mean the 320d is precise, responsive and rewarding. However, on the days when getting from A to B as smoothly and painlessly as possible is paramount then, like the stroppy teenager in front of his friend's parents, the BMW instantly goes on its very best behaviour and delivers stress-free motoring.

For the high-mileage driver, BMW's pleasing mix of refinement, comfort and nearly 60mpg is a tempting combination almost too good to turn down.

The cost of refinement and all this gadgetry is £26,680 on the road (price quoted for the test model, 320d SE). However, if you don't have all that cash to hand but you simply must have the latest BMW 320d, you can always search for a great deal on car loans.

The Nissan Micra

Small but perfectly formed - this supermini has a big personality

Perky little cars know no age barriers - they have massive appeal to everyone. Younger drivers enjoy the combination of under-bonnet zest and ultra-low car insurance, with the older end going for the long-life, economical engines, which also promise reliability.

That explains why Nissan's cute and cuddly Micra is a real hit with buyers of all ages. The Sunderland-built hatchback has been on sale since 2003. In that time it's won over thousands of buyers with a fine mix of eye-catching looks, easy-going nature and thrifty performance.
Great Design & Gadget-tastic!

The design is something everyone can admire. It's curvy and distinctive with a friendly face, and as well as helping it to stand out from the crowd, the long curving roof helps maximise interior space, which is good news for passengers front and rear.

It's the same story on the inside. Slide behind the wheel and you're greeted by a cabin that's attractive and easy to understand. The chunky steering wheel is nice to hold and has buttons mounted on it for controlling the stereo system, which is a useful safety feature. The rest of the controls are neatly laid out in the centre of the dashboard and it only takes a moment to get comfortable in the driving seat.

There are also plenty of toys available for gadget fans. As well as electric windows and an impressive stereo system, the Micra can also be specified with luxury items like leather upholstery, climate control and even keyless entry and start, which is something usually reserved for much more expensive cars.

Fun to Run, Cheap to Insure

Another ace in the Micra's hand is the engine range. There's a choice of one diesel and three petrol options, and all offer a good blend of performance and economy. For those looking to save a few pennies, the smallest 1.2-litre petrol is a good choice. With group two car insurance, over 40mpg and a price tag a little over £7,000, it's an attractive way into economy motoring.

The diesel version is even more appealing. With a gutsy 1.5-litre unit under the curvy bonnet, it has a useful turn of speed, yet can clock up remarkable economy - over 60mpg is possible. What's more, this sprightly model's still only in car insurance group three, which means low premiums.

Even the top models are only in insurance group seven, so premiums will be relatively low whatever the model.

Smooth and Reliable

The driving experience is effortless too. The driving position is comfortable and gives you a great view out, while the controls are smooth and undemanding, which partly explains why the Micra has been a hit with driving instructors for years! It's refined too, with little noise from the engine or the road making its way into the cabin. Even long motorway journeys are no problem for this little car.

As an ownership prospect, the Micra has a lot going for it too. Thanks to the first-class reputation of the UK-based production plant, the Micra has an excellent reliability record, which should mean breakdowns are an unlikely occurrence. All new Micras come with one year's free breakdown recovery as standard, but to extend that cover or if you're buying a used Nissan Micra.

Buying New

The Micra offers excellent value for money, whether new or used. New models start at £7,535 although many dealers have special offers, which will cut that price even further.

Buying Used

For used models, the earliest examples will now be worth around £2,000, putting them within the reach of most buyers. If you're buying used from a dealer or even from a private seller, car loans are a great way to get hold of the cash, and put you in a good position to haggle for a better price!

The New Toyota Venza

In one of the most recent posts from the OC Register's automotive blog, Michael Betts makes a good observation about ergonomics. While most drivers don't pay too much attention to the location of buttons positioned throughout the interior, the engineers that designed the car have. Essentially, if a car does have good ergonomics, it makes sense that the driver wouldn't have any reason to think of where buttons are placed.

While this blog post points out the ergonomics of the Ford Flex, perhaps an even better example of incredibly well executed interior ergonomics can be found in the all-new Toyota Venza. With its sleek, slopping center console, and large buttons and switches, Westminster Toyota dealer says that the Venza's interior may simply be the best of any Toyota model.

When designing the Venza, Toyota engineers made the interior in such a way that the made everything easy to operate, while also providing a unique level of sophistication that few of its competitors could mimic. The end result was an interior that was more Lexus than Toyota.

The Electric Sports Car Tesla Roadster

Given the current movement to 'go green' combined with the high cost of gasoline, the electric car is gaining in popularity. The Smart Car has been spotted weaving in and out of New York City traffic. However, the Smart Car is an energy efficient, practical, relatively inexpensive workhorse with a boxy shape.

The Tesla Roadster is a sports car and America loves a sports car. But due to its high price, it is oriented to a different market than the Smart Car.

The Tesla might also be dubbed an international sports car. Norway produces the chassis. The RTM carbon fiber body panels are made by SOTIRA, in St. Meloir and Pouance, France. Siemens in Germany manufactures the brakes and airbags. The motors are produced in Taiwan. And the Lotus factory in Hethel, England assembles the car.

Lotus has had considerable influence since the inception. Lotus provided design assistance and furnished the basic chassis development technology from the Lotus Elise. The styling was developed by Barney Hatt at Lotus' design studio however he did consult with Tesla engineers. It was Tesla engineers who decided to use resin transfer molded carbon fiber to construct the body panels.

The Roadster is available in two models, the Standard Model and the Sports Model. The Roadster is equipped with a 3-phase, 4-pole AC induction motor that can produce 248 hp. The Sport Model can produce 288 hp. The Standard Model can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds while the Sport model can do this in 3.7 seconds. The electronically limited top speed is 125 mph.

The Roadster's battery pack is called the Energy Storage System or ESS. It requires three and one half hours to fully recharge the battery. The battery weighs 992 pounds and in 2008, the cost of a replacement was $20,000.

From the very beginning Tesla had transmission problems, which caused several delays in production. Tesla experimented with several transmissions but none were successful. Finally, in September 2008 they decided to use a single speed Borg Warner fixed gear transmission. The Roadster is a rear wheel drive with most of the weight centered in front of the rear axle.
Weighing in at around 2,700 pounds, it is approximately 13 feet long, 6 feet wide and 4 feet high.

All Roadsters are equipped with left hand drive so at this time, Tesla cannot market in England or countries where traffic stays to the left-hand side of the road.

Paul Boutin of 'Slate' gave the Roadster an outstanding review. It also appeals to celebrities such as Jay Leno who dubbed it 'fun to drive.'

However, owning it will require a celebrity's income. To date the Roadsters have been sold on a reservation basis. Six hundred fifty were planned for 2008 and all were reserved. In 2009, Tesla plans to market 1500 vehicles. While the 2008 models were priced at $98,000 with a $950.00 destination charge, the price of the 2009 models has been raised to $109,000.

So for people who have $110,000 to $120,000 to spend, are in love with sports cars, and will accept an electric car, the Tesla is the car to buy.

The Supercar and Cult Car

Not too many automobiles have the distinction of being both a supercar and a cult car, but the Lamborghini Countach is one. Referred to by Forbes Magazine as "the poster child for cult cars", the Countach featured the exotic design and high performance criteria for supercars. Yet it also has the 'cult car' charisma.

The word countach itself implies exotic. In the native Piedmontese language it is used by men when they encounter an amazingly beautiful woman. The word is not translatable into English but expresses the same idea as a wolf whistle.

Marcello Gandini of the Bertone Design Studio designed the Countach. The Bertone Studio was also responsible for the Lamborghini Miura. The Miura is among the first if not the first of the super cars. British motor journalist used the phrase to describe the Miura in an article in CAR Magazine published during the 1960's. CAR magazine then claimed the credit for 'coining the phrase.'

A single prototype, the LP500, painted sunflower yellow, made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971. However the design needed considerable modification before it could be put into production.

The first production model was the LP400. It was a 2-door sports coupe with a rear mid-engine and rear-wheel drive.

Several modifications had to be made to the prototype. The air intake valves on the prototype were found to be inadequate for cooling the engine. So large air box scoops were added on the rear shoulders and large NACA ducts were added on the sides. The original futuristic light clusters were also replaced by conventional lights.

A total of 157 LP400's were produced. The first recorded delivery was made to D. Milne of the Australian Defence Force Transport Corps.

Then in 1978, Lamborghini brought out the LP400S. This was manufactured in a series of three. While the interior modifications were limited to an upgrade in the engine, the exterior changes were extensive. Lamborghini added fiberglass arch extension and replaced the tires with Pirelli P7 units, a much wider tire than was mounted on the LP400.

In 1982, the LP500S was introduced. The engine was upgraded to a more powerful 5-liter model but no changes were made to the exterior.

In 1985 additional improvements were made to the engine. Other changes were made to conform to US federal standards so the car could now be sold in the United States. This model was priced at $99,5000.

The year 1988 marked the 25th anniversary of the company. They celebrated by introducing the 25th anniversary Countach. This model had undergone considerable changes in styling that proved to be unpopular with many Lamborghini followers.

Then in 1975, Walter Wolf, an extremely wealthy Canadian businessman and owner of the Wolf Racing Team, purchased a LP400. However, he didn't like the engine. He, therefore, contacted Lamborghini's chief engineer and requested that the company custom build a special high-powered engine.

The result was an engine capable of reaching 315 kilometers per hour and producing 447 hp/7900 rpm. This model was also equipped with the upgraded wheels, Pirelli P tires, large fender flares and rear spoilers as had been installed on the LP400S. It was painted red with black fender flares.

The company produced 2,042 cars from 1974 to 1989 when they retired the design. Although its popularity has declined somewhat, it continues to be a collectible with a loyal following.
