Zagato marks the end of an era with custom Ferrari 550 GTZ Barchetta

When Ferrari took the wraps off the 550 Maranello in 1996, it represented an important step in the company's evolution. Replacing the aging F512M (nee Testarossa), the 550 Maranello marked a shift back to front-engine V12 GTs for Ferrari – the niche market for which the company became known. But if the 550 Maranello was a pivotal product for Ferrari, the 550 Barachetta Pininfarina was even more desirable.

Characterized by its open-top format with rear cowling and leather-trimmed roll hoops, Ferrari only made 448 examples of the open-top 550 before the model line was replaced by the 575M. Another 559 drop-top Superamericas were built on the 575M's basis, but the rarest example was the solitary 575 GTZ built by Zagato for one Yoshiyuki Hayashi, an avid Ferrari collector in Japan.

For better or worse, the window of opportunity that, for a time, allowed coachbuilders like Zagato to create specials like the 575 GTZ is now closing, with Ferrari's own customization program bringing the carrozzeria tradition back to the Maranello gates – to the exclusion of others. But not before the Milanese design house gets in one last hoorah, celebrating the 90th anniversary of the first such collaboration between the two Italian houses of rolling style.

Taking five pristine examples of the aforementioned 550 Barachetta as their basis, the 550 GTZ borrows the shape from Hayashi's 575-based coupe and gives it a roadster body style. There's no word on whether any modifications have been carried out on the coupe's mechanicals, but the rolling stock appears to have carried over unchanged if that's any indication. All five examples have reportedly been spoken for at a price of £1 million ($1.6 million) apiece, which may seem like a lot for a car long since replaced, twice, but hardly too much to ask for historic artifacts of automotive Italiana.

The Ford Focus SVT ZX3

The Ford Special Vehicle's Team (SVT) wanted to take their already popular sub-compact Focus and stuff just a little more performance into it to offer United States and Canadian customers a more powerful European style version of the vehicle. The SVT group worked very hard into late 2001 to prepare the even sportier SVT model to make ready for the 2002 market. Noticeable difference in the SVT Focus exterior included newly upgraded stylish bumpers, both front and rear, sleek looking side skirts, powerful factory fog lamps, and 17" alloy wheels. Also included in the Focus SVT body modifications, a rear diffuser to improve performance and handling.

Speaking of performance, the SVT Focus proudly sported a beefed up version of the 2.0 liter Zetec engine. Unlike the Zetec motors found in many other Focus models, this Cosworth modified engine featured performance modified aluminum cylinder heads, performance pistons, dual stage intake manifold, and a 4-2-1 tubular exhaust header increasing horsepower from 130 to 170 making for the most powerful factory produced Focus, SVT or any other model, as of to date.

The SVT Focus comes equipped with a Getrag high performance six-speed manual transmission and a dual mass flywheel to eliminate vibration and noise. The SVT Focus did however keep the same wheelbase as the Focus ZX3, but SVT steering was greatly improved through an increased boost ratio in the steering rack and the independent suspension stiffened it's springs 10% in the front and 20% in the rear along with larger sway bars to adjust for more aggressive handling and race-like cornering. Not to mention, four wheel anti-lock big disc brakes with 11.8 inch vented rotors mounted behind 17 inch wheels sporting 215/45ZR17 high performance Continental treads to truly set off the SVT Focus.

Looking inside, the Focus SVT interior features bucket leather seats, steering wheel, shift knob and boot as well as emergency-brake handle and boot. Titanium faced electro-luminescent gauges and race like pedals. Options for the Focus SVT included a power glass sunroof, a cold weather package with heated seats, Audiophile eight (8) speaker sound system with 8" sub-woofer, a 115 Volt block heater, heated side mirrors, traction control and, for 2003 and 2004 models, HID xenon headlamps.

Russian designer pens Maserati Kuba concept

It was only a few years ago, but how quickly we forget. Maserati actually toyed with the idea of building a crossover back in 2003, even going so far as to unveil a concept for the project called the Kubang GT Wagon at the Detroit Auto Show. The shape was penned by Giugiaro's ItalDesign, but project was scrapped, preserving the Trident marque's chastity in the eyes of many a purist. Now, an ambitious designer out of Russia has revived the idea with a concept he calls the Kuba. Sound familiar?

The brainchild of Andrey Trofimchuk Simeonych, the Maserati Kuba design study is, well...an intriguing take on what a Maserati crossover could look like. Only it doesn't share any design themes with any Masers we can think of. Nor does it have any theoretical specifications attached, though surely a platform and powertrain could be found from the growing Fiat/Chrysler automotive empire.

To our eye, it would look more suitable as a vision for what a future aircraft-engined Veritas sport-ute could look like, or maybe even a weird Citroën concept of some sort (is there any other kind?). The Historic Creation of Rolls Royce

Sir Henry Royce was born in the year 1821. When he was just 21 years old, he teamed up with Ernest Alexander Claremont and together they created a small electrical shop in Cooke Street in Manchester. Ten years later, what initially started as a shop was transformed into a public limited company and registered as Royce limited, a manufacturer of dynamos, motors and various automotive items.

During this period, Britain was not interested in cars while France and Germany had established automotive industries. When Britain finally turned to cars, Henry Royce followed their interest and built three prototypes in 1903. Thus, in 1904, the first Royce, the 10 HP model created on the Decauville, inspired by Henry Royce, came into being.

Charles Stewart Rolls, buff racing, bought his first car, a Peugeot, when he was 19 years old. In 1901, he participated in the Paris-Berlin Race driving a Mors. Rolls, passionate mechanics, members of several clubs were present wherever a sporting and mechanical event unfolded. In 1903 he founded a company to import cars from Belgium and France and resold all makes of cars with his partner Claude Goodman Johnson.

It was 1903, when Stewart Rolls was just twenty seven years old and Henry Royce forty one years, that Rolls and Royce met for the first time for lunch at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, thanks to Henry Edmunds who understood the geniuses and Rolls Royce could together present to the world a historic partnership in the automotive industry. After lunch, Royce had a ride in the Rolls with small 10 horsepower. Rolls was very impressed and announced that it was the car he wanted. It was at the Paris motor show in 1904 that the first cars, under the leadership by Claude Johnson, were named Rolls-Royce. Thus, December 23, 1904 saw the official creation of the automotive luxury brand Rolls-Royce.

The 2011 Acura Advanced Sportscar
